Ukrainian insurgents” attacked five children collecting wild strawberries in the forest, four of whom were murdered: two Polish children (Krzyś Kowalczyk and Adaś Wojtalik) and siblings from the Ukrainian Laszecki family (8‑year‑old Stanisław and 12‑year‑old Antonina), talking in Polish with Polish children, which confused them. The fifth girl managed to escape and hide in the swamps. They tormented the children. On the news of the murder of the children, Laszecka died of a heart attack, and her husband went insane.

and

Bystrzyce

During the UPA attacks and the Ukrainian population from the villages of Hruszówka, Pogorełówka and Bystrzyce, together with children armed with diggers and kittens, at least 22 Poles, mainly women and children, were murdered; The Poles took up the defense and evacuated to Huta Stara, Nowin and Moczulanka. Genowefa Lewtak came to Gdańsk from Wołyń from the village of Janówka in 1945. She is a teacher by profession. Here are excerpts from her statements: „Janówka was such a defensive fortress. We were running away from this Ukrainian massacre. My brother personally died in March 1943 with his sister–in–law and child. Poles were murdered, they died! Here and there, our The Ukrainians were murdering on the way. Kaszuba's father always organized funerals and services. He was with us. He stayed all summer until September 9, when Janówka was attacked in 1943 by a Ukrainian gang and completely burned down. Lots of people died that night. Everyone was distracted somewhere. And we, a group of Poles, fled towards the village of Stara Huta, near Moczulanka  […] It was on the night of September 8–9, during the feast of Our Lady of Sowing. I still remember the service that Father Kaszuba said in Janówka at the Kozłowski house. Father Kaszuba celebrated Mass. on the Mother of God, and there was a robbery at night. We even expected it, because the Ukrainian people, who were not in favor of the gang, let us know about it. We have prepared ourselves for this attack. We were on guard. Like a soldier, I stood guard with a rifle and a grenade”.

Janówka

The UPA massacred at least 22 Poles.
Finally, November 8, 1943. There was a distinctive, hollow sound during the night. Someone hit the pole. Mrs. Walentyna's father shouted for everyone to run towards Słucz. Everyone as they stood, in a nightgown. One of the older sisters died in the confusion. They were saved by the fact that the water level in the river was not too high. Some were helping others to climb the high bank. Then my mother turned and looked back.
— «Look, our house is on fire».
First, they took refuge in the ruins of Willy, noting with relief that there were no Banderites there. Later, they moved in small groups in different directions, their family towards Stara Huta. There, in the presbytery, the priest met her — the one to whom she was carrying bread. Thanks to this, they found the angle. Father is found, and a Ukrainian friend brought his sister. She lay frozen with terror in the bushes in the field.
— «We returned to Janówka for a while, escorted by partisans» — recalls Mrs. Walentyna. — «But there was no need. We only took some salt from our house. Dad found his ID card somewhere near the forest. Over 20 people were killed that night. And only one boy died from the bullet. They cut the rest. Mostly children and elderly people. We buried them in the common grave»
