Horochów

In March 1943, the Ukrainians attacked the Poles and Germans on Horochów. There were three Germans, barricaded, armed, and in the windows with sacks of sand. When shots appeared, people who could run away to brick houses. They locked themselves, and others went to the church to the presbytery, because it was made of brick, and next to the gymnasium, then to the Germans, because they knew that the Germans had weapons and armored cars, only there would be a defense. There was such a war all night that something terrible and we got awake, what's going on? We tidied ourselves up and went under such a hedge and looked, and we had three kilometers to Horochów. We are on the hill, and Horochów below, and we are watching the battle all the time and the neighbors have come to us, because everyone is scared, what it will be like, when the Ukrainians get Horochów, it will be „kaput”. We hear: hooray, hooray. So much of this terrible wilderness has invaded, because some have to beat, others to rob. With sacks, they went to rob the Jews, and now the Poles. We were terrified of fear, we could see a few fires, there were a lot of people and it lasted until three after midnight. Then the Germans and Poles, when they got into armored cars, when they drove through the city, when they started to network with machine guns, when the cannons started working, the Ukrainians ran away, it was nice to watch. We lived by the road, we saw everything as they walked, how they ran away, but we watched it all in secret, it was impossible to show ourselves to them, because they would have attacked us already then. They dispersed the gang and it was quiet for some time. There were many The Ukrainians killed, but they did not manage to take them, Poles were glad that they had defended the city and thought that there would be peace for some time. The bandits, however, do not give up, they beat and smoke at night.

Horochów

Samoobrona happily returned from the trip, they brought the bandits to Horochów and ordered them to lie down with their faces on the ground and called for the injured to come and recognize the bandits and let them kill them with a heavy hammer in the head. A lot of people went, they met the bandits. Jacek Keller went, aunt Ziemiańska went, she met the bandits, because she got tangled in a large oat, she fell and moved her granddaughter Marysia under her and somehow the bandit passed and did not notice them, and aunt saw them killing her daughters with two children and many others from Poluchno. She saw all this herself, and she covered her granddaughter with an apron so that she would not see, because she would not bear to watch her mother die. And I closed my eyes, says my aunt, and waited that they would kill me too, but God covered their eyes and I stayed that way. How was my aunt around these bandits and she met them and walked around them and said: Chryćka, why did you kill my children, my husband, son–in–law, two daughters, three grandsons and old grandparents from Earth? Why did you kill, what they took from you, what did they owe you? You could take everything and leave them alive, why did you do that? He roared that it was not him but Ukraine that killed them. And the guard says: Mrs. Ziemiańska, take this hammer and kill this bandit. And Mrs. Ziemiańska told him: may God kill him, I will not take his sins onto my soul and she went home crying. She cried very much for her children, grandchildren and her husband. Many watched and likewise did, no one dared to lift this hammer on the head thugs. They lay there with their heads to the ground until evening, and in the evening there were some who took them away, for what else was there to do with them, what they deserved, they got it. We were very sorry that our people had to do it, but in their own defense they did it, so as to deter the attack on Horochów.
