Around midnight, the UPA „Stach” /? / From the village of Zofiówka was attacked, during which they murdered 40 local Poles (15 men, 10 women, 15 children and adolescents) and 14 Poles from other villages who had taken refuge in Halinówka. Witness Henryk Wesoły: „It was on the night of March 27, when Mr. Socha woke us up. It was obvious that Halinówka was on fire […] Part of it from the side of Chołoniewicz was burnt. The Kleczaj family was murdered, they were stabbed by the Ukrainians to dry flax with bayonets, the Guz family was burnt, someone at the Rokit family, one of the richest farmers, was murdered. Andrzej Król died then, burned alive at home, his aunt and housekeeper, Fr Domański, burned in the barn next to the presbytery. 100 meters further, in a meadow, an organist, an elderly gentleman, was beaten with bayonets under an old ash tree. The headmaster of the school, Mr. Naumowicz and the doctor Shen were murdered and burned in the same way. The Kleczaj family also died. From later reports, I learned that residents of Chołoniewicz suspected of having pro–Polish sympathies were also murdered. The Trusiewicz family was slaughtered with knives, the women were raped, and then they were dragged with horses throughout the village. Staying in this place after such a terrible tragedy was probably like living on a powder keg […] One night, the Ukrainian neighbor, Hryc, warned my father about the danger threatening my cousin, Regina Krzeczkowska, a beautiful 17‑year‑old girl with long hair, who caught the eye of bulbowmen. The same night, the girl ran away from Chołoniewicz. She was saved and survived the war. A few days later, I myself witnessed a group of The Ukrainians leading two Poles in broad daylight, Henia Szczepkowski from Łades and Tokarski from Halinówka. After half an hour, shots were heard. It turned out that Tokarski managed to escape, and the shot Henio was later found by my father next to the road […] My mother's relatives, Wojciech and Paulina Krzeczkowski, Regina's grandparents, also suffered a tragic fate. They didn't want to run away. Although they were of purely Polish origin, their dress and customs did not differ much from Ukrainian families, they wore Sorochki shirts tied with string, they were completely immersed in the Ukrainian community. And yet they were murdered and buried in an unknown location”.
