Granatów

The Ukrainians murdered a dozen Polish families (about 50 people), only 8 of them are known by name. „I met Mrs. L. (maiden name Greniuk) in the waiting room of a medical clinic in Poznań  […] In 1942, according to In July (perhaps she was wrong and it was about 1943), Ukrainian nationalist bullets died in the village of Granatów by Ukrainian nationalist bullets, Mum's eldest brother, Mrs. L. (name Kolek), 40 and one of the sisters, 22. It happened like this: In the morning there was a knock at my brother's house, when he opened the door he was shot immediately without a word or warning, his sister escaped through the back window of the house, the Ukrainians realized quite quickly and ran to the back of the house calling from both sides. They started a chaotic cannonade with firearms to a runaway girl who fell into the cornfields. One of the bullets hit. One or more Ukrainians ran to kill her with butts. They kept beating until a shapeless pulp was left for the head. This is what Mrs. L.'s aunt recalled when she told her about this terrible event. She miraculously survived, because she received an «interesting shot» as Ms L, who told me this story, put it; namely, a bullet pierced the throat and came out on the cheek. The aunt fell unconscious in a huge pool of blood. The Ukrainians decided she was dead and left after committing the crime of her siblings. Meanwhile, the wounded woman woke up after maybe a dozen or so minutes, she saw the burning buildings, her brother's corpse with a hoe crossed on his chest and a rake left by the Ukrainians, she also found her sister's body, hitting the place where she was lying… fled. A day later she reached her home where she left her two young daughters. She only found ruins, she was about to give in to despair, when the frightened faces of her children peeked out from the bushes surrounding the place where the house stood. It turned out that when the Ukrainian bandits arrived, they hid in the attic in the hideout. The Ukrainians looted the house, stealing the most valuable things, then set the house and buildings on fire, stealing the entire livestock. They left one Ukrainian on guard with a gun in his hand in case someone escaped from the burning buildings. When the fire reached the attic, the girls jumped out. As he later told his mother and cousin, they were sure that the Ukrainian saw them – but he did not react. He pretended not to see them… Human reflex…? They hid in the backyard bushes, trembling so that the fire would not spread to the bushes… Fortunately, it did not happen”.
