The UPA took at least 5 Poles to the camps and murdered them in the forest. „And in our village of Głęboczyca there were the first murders of Tadeusz Iwański, found after a few days in the forest in a masked ditch with signs of terrible tormenting over it. At Bronisław Sławkowski with his wife Maria murdered in the same brutal way. In the neighboring Holy Lake colony, Śliwa with his wife, Józef Szymczak with his wife Adela and Czesław Dzięgielewski were murdered. For a few weeks in Głęboczek, my father Michał Winiarski, Adam Grela, Stanisław Sobieraj, Adam Iwański and Lipert were murdered. All of them were found in the surrounding forests buried in masked” sites.

The village of Głęboczyca stretched between the forest and the valley of the Turia River. It contained about 70 farms with an average state of ownership. The main road connecting the counties of Włodzimierz Woł ran through the village. and Kovelski, as well as the villages of Hajki and Turyczany, inhabited only by the Ukrainian population, which housed the Ukrainian rural and commune authorities with the SB and UPA police. The road was littered with nameless graves without any trace or sign. Every day, this way the victims were taken to be shot or slowly murdered to the forest or those already murdered in order to mask them. Last month, just before the general massacre in Głęboczyca, the Ukrainian authorities selected five horse–drawn submarines from our village to transport representatives of the Ukrainian authorities and the UPA. They were Grela Adam, 50, Sobieraj Stanisław, 52, Wieniarski Michał, 43, Lipert and Iwański Adam, 22. These hosts never returned to their homes. They were found in forest areas, murdered and buried without a trace. At the same time, his neighbor, Władysław Iwański, a 19‑year‑old breadwinner, was arrested at night. A few days after his arrest, he was found in the woods. It was excavated with the permission of the municipal authorities and a funeral was organized for him. He had not a single whole bone on his body, his tongue was cut out, he was without eyes and ears. In our village, Władysław Iwański, a 19‑year‑old boy, was arrested in the village of Owłoczy, about five kilometers away. From the Podświętne colony, the Śliwów couple and Adela Kędzierska were arrested, whom I found with my father the next day, when I was walking with him through the forest. The place was masked with burnt straw. I told Sister Adela about this discovery, who informed their families. The relatives of the murdered dug them up, and the victims were buried with a permit previously issued by the commune of the Ukrainian authorities.

Głęboczyca
Orthodox feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary: „Ukrainian insurgents” together with Ukrainian peasants from neighboring villages murdered about 250 Poles – „from” infants (e.g. a child of Bolesława Zarzycka), „to the elderly” (e.g. a 96‑year‑old Kazan widow). The attack took place at dawn, they killed with axes, pitchforks, knives, spades, poles, etc. They brutally tortured the victims, cutting their tongues, arms and legs; half–alive they threw into the pits which they filled. Injured 11‑year‑old Ania Krakowiak was buried alive. The little child of Jan and Aniela Sławski smashed his head against a pole.

In the last days of August 1943, on the Sunday before dawn, the day was almost getting up, I was awakened by the echo of the cry of neighbor geese. I was very concerned about this morning loud noise. I jump up from my lair in the barn and run out into the yard. I burst into a sleeping family in my apartment and wake everyone up loudly. The mother, very frightened, takes the younger siblings from the bed, grabs what was at hand from their clothes and runs away towards the Turia River. Along the way, in front of the river, in a field of grain already deposited in piles, he hides with his younger siblings in these heaps. Desperate, she tells me to run away to our cousin Józef Chojnacki, who lived on the eastern edge of the village of Głęboczyca. It was not far from us, about 1.5 kilometers. After a dozen or so minutes, I reach the Chojnacki house. I find no one in my cousin's house, I notice that all the doors in the rooms are open and I can see that they have been lowered, just like ours. Then I did not find any of them. Only later did I find out from my uncle Stanisław Winiarski, who was also slaughtered by the UPA gang, when he was there earlier, he left the house for the inventory ceremony. Hidden in the cowshed, he saw how his minor children and the family of their neighbor, my cousin Chojnacki, were murdered. He claimed that while chopping his family with axes, Chojnacki and his family managed to slip out of the house unnoticed into a well–overgrown garden. Under the cover of trees, they run to the dozens standing with grain, where everyone is hiding. Perhaps they would have been able to survive had it not been for the chained dog that had not been left in the yard and howled loudly. Bandits rush into the apartment, in which there was no one to hack. They became interested in the howling of the dog. They grab him and release him from captivity. The dog breaks free from the bandits and chases to those hidden in the crops. There was no rescue for them. UPA gang with The Ukrainians from Dulib and Turyczan are murdering. Chojnacki's cousin himself, unless he hid out of rage, was chained to the horse's harness and dragged behind the galloping animal until only naked fragments of flesh remained. From the Chojnacki family, whom I have no longer found, I go back towards the river. I'm driving through the field where my mother and siblings were hiding. I penetrate several dozen and see that my dearest person, my Matula, is already dead in one of the dozen. She was hit with the ax blade very deep through the center of the head, showing no movement or sign of life. The wound on the head is so swollen that the head is divided with the bloody brain on the surface covered with clotted blood. I cannot look at this terrifying sight, at such a terrible death of my Matula, flooded with blood. Fearful that I can no longer help her in anything, I fear, fear and look into the other heaps of grain behind my siblings. Behind sisters Danuta, 6, Czesława, 4, and brothers Jan, 14, and Albin, 2. I haven't found any of them. Terribly afraid, I returned home. I dress in better and thicker clothes, take what is at hand from home, some food and a loaf of bread. I go across the Turia River to my friend, Wojtowicz, who has a Ukrainian wife. At the Wojtowiczs' house, I hide in a barn full of grain already brought from the field. Eight people from the nearby Polish villages are already hidden there. Some of them were friends with me. From our Głęboczyca Jan Żuk, the elder from Słowikówka, Kraszewski, 18, and Wdowiak, a few years older than me. We hide at Wojtowicz's house for a few days, after which, certainly by his Ukrainian wife's denunciation, we are all discovered. UPAs come to pick us up in a horse cart and take us all to court for an investigation. This court is located in an abandoned forester's house in the woods. We go under the supervision of the UPA, we cross a field of thick lupine on the way. We see this lupine being searched by the UPA with rifles and a few groups of peasants with axes. Some of them carry hooks mounted on their handles, like sandals. We can see how several children in hiding were detected during the penetration of the lupine. They were the children of Maszka and Szczepański from Głęboczyca. All of them in this lupine on the spot are hacked with axes or murdered with hooks. In the forester's lodge, the UPA investigates us for several days, each one of them asked about our participation in the army or possession of weapons. None of us could answer any of the questions because we did not meet with it. They urge us to join their organization. After a few days of investigation, everyone is taken to Hajeki. Evening was already approaching. It was already dark in Hajki. They put us in a large, closed, empty barn. Under the cover of the night, which happened to us so much that it was very dark and rainy, we decide and look for a way and an opportunity to get out of this barn. After midnight, we manage to pry one of the logs in the wall of the pigsty; by some of us it has resigned. This way, we almost crawl as quickly as possible and quietly get outside the buildings. Under the cover of night, the whole group succeeds in walking several times towards Włodzimierz Wołyński. or possession of a gun. In the last days of August 1943, on an early Sunday morning, just before sunrise, my parents were busy with the morning rite of inventory. The rest of the family was still asleep. At that time, our grandmother, Anna Zymon, runs screaming and despairing, saying in horror that the Ukrainians in our village of Głęboczyca are murdering Poles. Then the parents, without thinking, grab the sleeping underage siblings, and they break us, the elders, from the bedding, while the father says to his mother: „Run away along the ravine towards the Turia” River. On the other hand, he sits down on his horse and calls after us that he will try to stop the UPA gang. My father was a legionnaire. Now I realize that he was trying to distract the gang from us so that we could run as far as possible. He knew it was hard for us, because each of us, the older ones, was pulling the younger one by the hand. The gang turned all their attention to their father, started firing firearms at him. At that time, we ran towards the river. We ran away breathlessly. On the way, we heard a gang murdering the Zamrzycki neighbors. We see how the piles with axes chase the neighbour's children after them, how they shoot them with rifles. We all, as a whole group, hear the terrifying cry of his children and the despairing cry of Zamrzycka's neighbor for help, calling for help. There was no respite for us and no time to reflect. As much as there was strength in each of us, we run. Fortunately for us, we reached the river. We are looking for a ford, but so as not to be noticed between the rushes and bushes. After crossing the river, everything is wet. Chilled and tired, we make our way through riverside bushes and high rushes to the forest – we are safer now, because we are masked by quite a lot of fog. In the forest, we slow down a bit. The grandmother of both families, hers and ours, goes to the village of Stawki, to the colony of Stawki, to our uncle, Franciszek Tatys. Fortunately, we are already walking through the forest. The fear of hitting with an ax is a bit weaker. We are tired and hungry, but my grandmother and mother, carrying little children, still urge us to walk faster. We're staying with Uncle Tatys in his barn. Tatys cannot believe such a crime, he goes to his Ukrainian neighbor to get some news under the guise that a cow is calving at his place and he needs help. The Ukrainian's wife tells her uncle that her son and husband are not at home because they had been ordered to report to the Ukrainian village in Turyczany. Our aunt is preparing a meal for us. During this time, my father comes to us and our Ukrainian uncle comes back. After a short conversation between my father and Tatys, we do not wait for a meal, my father decides to go further towards Madejów. We go there in the forest, but we feel safe with my father. We avoid the Ukrainian villages – Turyczany and Przewły. Already in the evening my father stops with us in the forest, and he goes himself to his friend from the army. He brings us bread and milk from that friend and we eat. In the meantime, my father's friend and his neighbors are preparing a horse–drawn cart to take the children to Maciejów. They organize themselves to be escorted to security and follow the carts on foot. We get to Maciejów at dusk, we stop at the church square. In Maciejów, we place ourselves in the presbytery in the church – a large group of people gather here. We all sit on the floor in the church. In the cold and hunger, scared and exhausted by the road, we wait in the morning, dozing. Uncle Tatys arrives in the morning, but not with all his family. He tells us that while escaping, he came across The Ukrainians patrolling the roads, armed with axes and rifles. Wanting to avoid them, he hid in the bushes. A group of bandits, however, noticed them and chased them. During the escape, his sons died, one at the age of 6 and the other at the age of 8. / / From a story by my great–uncle Eugeniusz Sobieraj, I know how his family and his father, Antoni, were murdered. During the murder of the family, they both ran for a rifle buried under a pear tree. However, they did not reach him because they were noticed by the oncoming ryzuns. They hid in the grain mounds. Eugene, hiding in the kick, turned her over. Father hid next to those standing. The bandits knocked over the hooves while looking for them. When they saw it overturned where Eugene was hidden, they bypassed her as already overturned, from the next one that was standing they dragged my father out and began murdering him. The father, hit on the head with an ax, fell over, the bandits cut him in half. At that time, Eugeniusz lost consciousness, and after regaining it, he joined the group escaping to Włodzimierz Wołyński. From another account I know how the family of our neighbor Grzesiak was murdered. During the murders, they hid with their well–known Ukrainian, Trochim. In order to hide them, he commissioned them to dig a shelter within their buildings. After digging the hole, like a shelter, he unexpectedly killed Grzesiak and his wife, who were still standing below, with an ax. Without fear, he hacked three of their underage children with an ax and already covered the pit. In this way, he became a hero of the OUN–UPA – because he fought with the Poles. It was a very close, good neighbor, Trochim. who was standing, they pulled my father out and started murdering him. The father, hit on the head with an ax, fell over, the bandits cut him in half. Witness Lucjan Metrzelski: „On Saturday evening, August 28, a neighbor came with his family for the night. It seemed to them that it would be safer to survive the night. The younger siblings were put to sleep. Sitting down, I listened to my parents talking to my neighbor about the difficult situation in the face of the lawlessness prevailing in the area. about raging brutal murders and massacres committed on Poles. about bullying, victims murdered by breaking bones, cutting off members of the body, hatching the eyes of still alive victims for a sadistic purpose, causing greater suffering and torment for the joy and joy of UPA bandits. Before dying, each of the victims was forced to dig a hole in the place of torture; about the raping of underage girls, as it was said that they were not allowed to be slaughtered before rape. around midnight, weary of fear and sleep, I go to my hideout in the barn. Rifle shots and the dog's fierce howling and barking wake me up. I jump off the bed. Through a crack in the wall of the barn, I can see the UPA gang murdering my father. Surrounded by a group of people armed with rifles and axes, he struggles with the bandits and receives an ax blow to the head from behind. He staggered forward, bent at his knees, and fell facedown in convulsions. Mother managed to run out with a terrible scream: «Oh Holy Mother!» and ran through the gate into the patio. For a loud roar: «Stij!» stopped, but was knocked down by a shot and hit with an ax while lying down. Frightening screams of despair, with no way to save, thrashing siblings and murderers chasing after them. Yes, it's the end of the world for them, with no way to save. Stunned by the massacre and the tragedy of the family, I see my neighbor shouting: «Run away, the UPA gang is murdering!» ran out the back door to the outside of the barn. I fall behind him and we ran away for a distance, but already noticed by the UPA, the rest of the neighbor's family is running behind us, but they did not manage to run away, shot with rifles and finished off with axes. Several bandits chased after us, firing their rifles on the run, kneeling on one knee, and pointing at us. The bullets hiss around the ears, but we run further and further. We managed to run away to such a distance that the arrows were no longer dangerous. We barely made it. after running into the forest, the space between us and the gang became completely longer. We stopped for a moment. We consider for a moment whether to come back, but the influence of fear is stronger. We hid ourselves in the thicket of grasses and so we hid for a while. We listen and look if they are not chasing. We can already hear shooting around the village, terrifying screams and howling of bandits. This meant that the UPA gang swept the entire village. We listen to the shots for a while. You can hear terrible, terrifying crying from everywhere, screams of despair, cries for help, which no one will give them again. We decide to go further. We run out of the forest to the next village – Grabina. There was no shelter there either. Not even an hour has passed when we see frightened people throwing themselves in different directions from both sides of the village and at the same time hear the unleashed and intensifying shooting of rifles. People running out of fear do not know which way to run, everyone hides wherever they can. Everyone hopes it might work. This situation and the shooting make us run away. We run from Grabina in the direction between the Ukrainian villages of Duliby and Kulczyn. We see how from Kulczyna they strive our way. We change the direction over the river marshes to the left, we pass Turia towards Dolsk. The torturers chasing us do not cross the river and turn back. We run slower to a small forest. Entering it without caution we would almost run into a gang, there were about 40 people standing in the crowd. She listened so diligently to the speech inside the man standing that we were unnoticed. Long after, we concluded that they were preparing to attack the village of Holy Lake, which we had warned. We run as fast as we can, avoiding Ukrainian villages, we come to a large forest massif in which we meet a large crowd of people. These people have already managed to hide here. It has horses and carts, as well as various defense equipment, most often axes and scythes. With a group of these people we go to the town of Maciejów, only once accosted in one Ukrainian village by a small group of UPA patrols, we reached Maciejów. It was already evening, we received a meal at the presbytery with the priest. Several hundred people have already gathered in the presbytery. as much as possible, we were accommodated in different angles. With regret and despair, after the murdered on one of the pews in the church, I fell asleep and so this day of the apocalypse ended for my family. The days of wandering without home and loved ones among strangers have started for me. after time, I often recall the words of my fathers who spoke about the near end of this world, perhaps under the influence of repression, wild banditry, in the face of the ever–increasing brutal murders. They didn't know, or maybe they didn't want to know, or maybe they sensed it, but it was impossible to speak, because why frighten children? What is to be let it be, and such a necessity came as if they had pronounced this end. Yes, and they were killed with axes. Unaware that this end of this world was supposed to be so cruel. The following died: father Stanisław, 56, mother Helena, 43, siblings, Zofia, 18, Helena, 15, Marcelina, 8, Heronim, 6, Krystyna, 4, Henryka, 2, from the neighbor's family Jan Marnot, with whom we managed to break out of this hell, the following died: Franciszek's wife, 40, children, Władysław, 14, Marian, 12, Bronisław, II, Helena, 2”.
