Dobcza

Excerpt from an interview with Teodorom Pawliwiec about a mass murder in Dobcza carried out by the NZW group under the command of Józef Stolierski 'Wołyniak'  […] :
— «How did your deportation to Ukraine go?»
— «In our village… Raids and attacks, people fled to the Black Forest. [The Poles] came at night and murdered a girl on the edge of the village. Policemen came and sniffed who was working in Germany or who served in the German police. They took Fedak, the brother of the one I was talking about, and killed him somewhere near Sieniawa  […]
Before the displacement of the great victims, there weren't any, except those in hideouts, and in May 1946. First, six families gathered to go to the train station in Jarosław. They took the risk, consciously. And what? They drove up behind Rudka, Poles, Polish gangs and policemen intercepted them in the forest. Four people were murdered, a few escaped and robbed the carts

Dobcza

1946 May 20, typescript — Fragment of 'Medwed' report about the murder of Ukrainians in the village of Dobcza on May 18, 1946:
I report that on May 18, 1946, at 6.30 p.m., a Polish band of over 60 people entered Dobcza from the side of Krasne. The gang was armed with machine guns, automatic machines and rifles. The smaller part of it wore various military uniforms, the rest were civilian. First, they entered the hamlet of Kowale, then formed a line and quickly approached the village. Whomever they encountered, they took with them. And so they walked through the village towards Krzywe, to the chapel (to the road leading to the school), where they shot all those caught earlier, and then from this place they returned to the village and started smoking and shooting at escaping people. Excerpt from the protocol of interrogation of an unknown gang member by an employee of the SB‑OUN about the murder of the NZW unit under the command of Józef Zadzierski 'Wołyniak' in the Ukrainians in Dobcza:
About the action in the village of Dobcza in Jarosław poviat on May 18, 1946, I know that he did it" Wołyniak 'with his gang. That day, when 'Wołyniak' attacked Dobcza, my brother Piotr was in Sieniawa and he found out about it from Surmiński. Brother Piotr returned from Sieniawa, ate dinner, took a gun (PPSz) and went to Dobcza, where he met a gang of 'Wołyniak'. From Sieniawa, the following people took part in the action to the village of Dobcza: Surmiński Bronisław and Król Mietek, 22; There were 10 from Majdan Sieniawski, I do not know their names. From the action in Dobcza, my brother brought men's clothes. He said at home that during the operation 17 (seventeen) Ukrainians in the village of Dobcza were killed, the village was burnt and the cattle were stolen”.

Excerpt from Stefania Kulka's memoirs about the murder of Ukrainians in Dobcza by the NZW unit under the command of Józef Zadzierski 'Wołyniak':
After those bandit attacks in 1945 [on Dobra], most of Dobcza left, there were only 40 families affected by the tragedy. It was 1946, on May 18, a gang burnt down the village and shot 18 people near the chapel. Only a 13‑year‑old boy, Ivan Kudłak, came out alive. His father and sister were murdered, he fell and survived among the corpses  […]
I present those murdered in Dobcza on May 18, 1946: Oleksander Kudłak, Anastazija Kudłak, Dmytro Chodan, Iwan Chodan, Tańka Chodan, Andrij Puchta, Petro Szegda, Wasyl Fedak, Iwan Kołotka, Dmytro Fedak, Marija Capłan, Sofija Capłan, Fedir Pawliwać, Julijan Grabowski, Grabowski and Grabowska (they came from Ożanna, from where they escaped from the murders), Anna Dziuban, Ołeksander Kudłak

Excerpt from Ivan Kudłak's memoirs about the murder of Ukrainians in Dobcza:
I want to tell you about the tragedy of my life. I experienced it in my village of Dobcza on May 18, 1946. I was 13 then. Between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. a Polish gang burst into our village. I was grazing cows, my mother and younger children were at home, and my dad and 18‑year‑old sister were in the garden. The bandits were walking through the village and whoever they caught they chased them together. One bandit saw my father, sister and me. He rode up to us on his horse and together, beating my father with a rifle, he hurried us to the chapel. There were already killed people lying there. The bandit immediately put us next to the chapel. I don't remember anymore if he fired or one of the others. First he shot his father three times. Behind the third ball, Dad fell to the ground. Then he shot me. The bullet passed through my jacket on my shoulder and I fell to the ground. I didn't know if I was alive or dead, or if I thought I was alive. My eyes were closed. Then the bandit shot her sister and she fell next to me. I heard the words:
— «Burn all the buildings one by one».
They left, I tried very hard not to breathe, finally I opened my eyes and saw that no one was there. I ran towards the forest, where the sotnya of 'Kalynowycz' stood and immediately rushed to help the villagers. Our house burned down, my mother was burned. We lost our home, clothes and food. The next day, the UPA dug a grave near the chapel, where all [murdered] were buried. After this tragedy, I became seriously ill

Excerpt from an interview with Teodorom Pawliwiec about a mass murder in Dobcza carried out by the NZW group under the command of Józef Stolierski 'Wołyniak'  […] :
— «The Boryms lived in Dobcza. What do you know about them?»
— «Borym, Ivan…»
— «There was only one family with this name in the village?»
— «Yes, Borym Ivan, his wife was also from Dobcza, her name was Kateryna, he studied… First, in 1914 he was captured by the Russians, who took him somewhere to the Volga River. There he started to study, then he came back and continued his studies, because he wanted to become a doctor. He studied at a secret Ukrainian university in Lviv. Later, a professor of medicine, Pańczyszyn, helped him, probably at the University of Vienna, which he graduated and worked as a doctor. During the German occupation, he worked as a doctor in Jarosław in a Ukrainian gymnasium or somewhere there. He worked like that throughout this period until, it seems, he was not murdered in 1944  […] »
— «Where was he buried?»
— «In Jarosław».
— «There is a tomb?»
— «There is a grave, I even have a photo of his grave somewhere. Wife and daughter were buried here. I don't know where my son was buried  […]
In 1946, on May 18, the gang of 'Wołyniak' attacked from Krasny, from the side of Majdan [Sieniawski], where the gang was established. They attacked the village, shouted don't run away, don't run away, and whoever they caught, they led them to a chapel, because we had a chapel, in the Chodania yard. One of the refugees informed the 'Kałynowicz' group that Poles had attacked the countryside. The partisans immediately ran towards us. When Poles heard that something was going on, they killed 18 people in this yard. And they set the village on fire. I read in a book from America that our people started their car. They fled somewhere, to Maidan, but set the village on fire, although not all of it. Our boys burned the rest according to the rule: if not ours, then not yours
