Dąbrowa

Fragment of Kateryna Syhin's memoirs about the murder of Ukrainians in Chotyniec:
it happened on the feast of the Epiphany of the Lord in 1946. We went to Chotyniec to dedicate water, because in our [hamlet] Dąbrowa there was no church. In the evening, a man from our village comes to visit us, his name was Ołeksa Paluszek.
— «Come,» he says, «terrible time has come, we were attacked and terrible time has arrive!».
People started running home. We come, and the army is coming with incendiary balls, and all the houses were covered with straw. How they started to smoke, how they started to walk around and murder our people, how they started shooting these incendiary bullets. I ran away (my hands are already shaking), mum and dad stayed.
When I returned the next day from Zaleska Wola, they told me about it. After the house of Bodnar Hryńek was set on fire, the army drove him, beaten, to us, terribly beaten.
— «Where is he» he asks, «your son?».
Dad says he went to the front. The soldiers led my father, mother and this Bodnar to the yard, and placed them in one row. The soldier shot first at my father, the second bullet at Bodnar, and my mother, seeing both of them shot, ran away to the great bush of our gooseberry.
— «God blocked his eyes and he did not see that I was there» [– she said later].
My mother heard that they were walking near the house saying:
— «In this cottage they are all beaten»
and they set the house on fire. The cow, chickens and all the grain were burned, and Dad was burned, and this Bodnar was burned  […]
Several people were killed in Dąbrowa. Bodnara Petra near his house, Bodnar Hryńka in our house; Latin Theodore ran away somewhere, they shot him on the road, he fell dead; Switus' Stepan came out with the pillow on his back, got a bullet, fell and so with the pillow on his back he lay until the next day when we came; They grabbed Anna Switusza by the hands, by the legs and threw her alive into the fire, and her son escaped through the window, and what could she do? Kateryna Sarmanewycz, married Żołudko, was locked up in a burning house and she burned alive near the kitchen. The next day, when we came with her sister, it was impossible to see where her head was, where her hands were, only the trimmings on the skirt were left, by which we recognized something. Bodnar Anna was shot, she did not die right away, only after some time, because she could not withstand the bullets from the machine. Andrij Kic was also alive for some time, then he died. Bohacz Kateryna was also shot and died later  […] There were five houses left in Dąbrowa, the rest they burned, although they were burning and killing for about an hour and they immediately ran away
