Chwojanka
The Ukrainians murdered over 20 Poles, including a mother with 3 children and a father with 4 children. „A Ukrainian, whose father called «Petryk», who lived in Chutor, said that if there was a threat, he would come and warn one. That is what happened at night. I was 11 years old. At night, at 4 o'clock, there was a knock on the door. We were all at attention, like this «hare on the bounds»… Father asked through the door: Who's there? – It's me, Petryk. He was not sure if he was alone, but he opened the door. He was alone. He says: «There was a conference tonight, for the next night Chwojanka is to be murdered and burned. Tomorrow you must flee. The next night they will come. Father will come to us immediately.: You will go to one uncle, you to the other, and we are leaving at 9». Thus, during the night, people started getting ready to escape […] Father and another brother–in–law went to Kostopol to check if there was any place to live there. «Małe Siedliszcze»– there was a mill there there is flour. The miller knew his father. And he went out on the road asking: Where are you going? – To Kostopol.
– Don't go an hour ago on the road 4 Polish families were murdered! Father went, checked, there was room, he came back to us. We decided to go. Two families decided to take a shortcut through the forest to the nearest town of Kostopol (the Banderites did not attack the cities, they were afraid of the German garrisons) because their departure was delayed for various reasons. Bagiński made shoes for his son and wanted to finish them. The second family delayed packing… they couldn't find the wheel… It was the Pilczarski family who lived next to my uncle Jan, and his wife was my godmother. They had 5–6 children. We went this roundabout road, they wanted to go shorter through the forest, called: «Postomicki Forest». but there were Ukrainians stationed there, something like three thousand… We were passing through anowal, our parish was… We got a blessing from the parish priest for the road… (speaker's emotion)… About 5 km from Kostopol when we heard shots from this direction of the road through the forest… […] We settled down. Father went out on the road. I follow him. We go to the same road as we came, and that's where Bagiński goes. And then he told… They drove into the forest. Two Ukrainians left there. His wife grabbed one of the rifles weeping and would not let go. Only the second one had to shoot her. Bagiński ran away, and Pilczarski did the same. His son too. And the two of them escaped. Bagiński's son in these new shoes, which his father did to him, ran slower. The Ukrainians shot him too. Only these three escaped. There were 5 or 6 children in each family. They stayed there on the carts. The Ukrainians murdered all of them… The children were in the woods, when the child cried, when the mother said softly: the child stopped immediately. Such was the fear… It is unthinkable, unthinkable… We stood on the road for a while, they were carrying a corpse, a murdered Pole, on a cart. Terrible sight, broken fingers, I will not forget that”…
