Chodaczków Wielki

Ukrainian SS men from SS „Galizien–Hałyczyna” slaughtered the Polish population. 862 bodies of „Poles, from infants to” old people, were buried in the grave, but many people were burnt, burnt with the ruins of houses, hence the real number exceeds 1,000 victims. Polish self–defense successfully defended itself against the UPA, hence the staff of the OUN–UPA „asked” of their SS men from the 14th volunteer Waffen SS Division „Galizien–Hałyczyna” for help. „On April 15, 1944, Saturday morning there was still acrid black smoke, a new day of drama and tragedy of Chodaczków Wielki was beginning. The dead bodies lie for three days, no one is collecting them, it was not possible  […] A grave was dug next to the Church and they were all buried there, as they were dressed on their last day. Residents who experienced this great tragedy hid wherever they could. And so they were hungry for three days, with small children. People thought only about little children, they ate nothing, hungry from a cold for three days, felt and knew what fear was. Where to run, where to hide, the mother runs away with her little daughter Valeria shots from the machine, the mother falls dead, little Walercia does not cry, she calls out to her mother, mother's eyes look at the sky, they are open. Someone is calling, save the baby. Walercia is not crying, she watches her mother's body turn pale. The second mother, Rozalia, is killed, her 13‑year‑old daughter Staś is crying desperately, 12‑year‑old son Janek spreads his hands and calls out to mum, mum, don't leave me. The whole Chodaczków was on fire. The great wind was struggling, the houses were burning, the smoke reached as far as Draganówka, reaching Tarnopol. Where to hide, where to run, people hid in pits, pits, wherever it was possible. Walercia lost her mother, father and uncle. Janek wipes his tears, does not cry, he cannot, he knows that his dad and uncle are dead. Maria and her 16‑year‑old daughter Karolina are running away, their house is on fire, where to run away. There were no shots at Jan D.'s, the house somehow still hasn't burned down, the landlord leaves the house, he falls dead on the threshold. The day was slowly going west, the fire was still burning. Chodaczków Wielki was on fire. These are the days of the inhabitants of Chodaczków Wielki, 3 days of tragedy and drama, 860 inhabitants died, they rest next to the church (today fragments of the wall) in a common grave of 3 meters by 30”.

Myrosław Onyszkewycz „Orest Karat” gave the order: „I order you to purge your area immediately from the Polish element and Ukrainian–Bolshevik agents. The purge should be carried out in riverside hostels sparsely populated by Poles. To this end, create a militia near the area, composed of our members, whose task would be to eliminate the above–mentioned. Our larger hostels will be cleared of this element by our military units even in broad daylight  […] The clearing of the area must be completed before our Easter so that we can celebrate it without Poles. Remember that when the Bolsheviks find us with Poles in our territory, they will slaughter us all  […] Make a hard, ruthless fight with them. Not to spare anyone, even in mixed marriages. To take Lachs out of their houses, but The Ukrainians and children in these houses should not be liquidated  […] Get the gun. Death to the Poles. Stop, April 6, 1944. Glory to the heroes! Orest, Karat” This order is in the files of the investigation against Myroslav Onyshhevych.

Chodaczków Wielki

At night, the Bandera followers attacked the presbytery wanting to murder Fr Szczepan Chabło. He hid, so they robbed the presbytery, put all the items on the priest's cart and harnessed his horses, and shot his brother Piotr and sister Rosalia. The murderers were local The Ukrainians and the neighboring village of Horodyszcze. „I celebrated a silent Mass for my brother and sister and the bodies of the victims were placed in a grave in the cemetery. The voice of the angel's trumpet will awaken them to the resurrection to accuse the criminals in the court of the just God”.
