Borownica

Two Bandera followers entered the presbytery and shot Fr Józef Kopeć. „The first victim, murdered on July 12, 1944 by bandits from Uluczań, was a Roman Catholic priest from Borownica Józef Kopeć. On that day, two bandits from Ulucz visited the priest. They introduced themselves as messengers with a letter from a priest from Tarnawa. One of the bandits reached into his pocket as if for a letter, pulled out a pistol and in front of the hostess he fired a few shots at the priest, killing him on the spot, after which both murderers left the rectory and headed for Ulucz. On the way, Waleria Kozłowska, a resident of Borownica, met these bandits, who recognized one of them because he had a limp on one leg. These bandits were Michał Serednicki and Wasyl Choma, both from Ulucz. On the third day after this heinous crime, the family of a priest from Dynów, escorted by German soldiers, came to Borownica. During the funeral mass, two soldiers were lying with a machine gun in a trench about 30 meters away from the church, thus protecting the funeral participants from a possible attack by the Bandera followers. All the inhabitants of Borownica and Poles from Ulucz were at the funeral mass, among whom I saw my grandfather, Stefan Czebieniak, Jan Polański. After the mass, the funeral procession set out on carts towards Dynów. The procession was accompanied all the way by a German escort. The new priest did not come to Borownica until the end of September 1944”.
