general info

Borek Kuty

The UPA massacred 7 Poles, including 2 girls. „Nikodem Dąbrowski lived with his wife Maria Iwanicka in the Borek Kuty colony in the Berezna commune. In June 1943, nineteen‑year‑old Genowefa, d/o the Dąbrowski family, was summoned to go to forced labor. So she decided to say goodbye to her sister living in another colony, and also borrow a suitcase from her for the trip. She took her younger sister Władysława for the company. After a few kilometers, however, the women were stopped by a patrol of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, which was already picking up Poles encountered on the road. The frightened girls initially pretended to be Ukrainian women. The Banderites, however, were not fooled. The commander of the patrol suspected that the girls were liaison officers of some partisan unit or a Polish self–defense center. He didn't want to believe that their parents had only let them on such a dangerous path because of the suitcase. The girls were sentenced to death along with five previously captured Poles. The torture has begun. For a long time, the torturers stabbed their bodies with knives. However, to prevent them from bleeding out too quickly, they would cover the wounds with cotton wool found in the purse. In total, they were dealt 40 blows before they died in agony. They ordered their bodies to be buried in the forest. When the girls' father found out about the tragedy, he immediately went to the scene. He took the bodies of his children and took them to the Annowola cemetery the next night. There he buried them next to the burned church”.
