general info

Berezowica Mała

The UPA massacred the Polish population with the use of various tools, using brutal torture, murdered at least 131 Poles and wounded 20. „Numerous Bandera militias, well–armed, came from the Volhynia border (border between the District of Ukraine and the General Government – S.Ż.). First, they attacked Polish farms in a hamlet located about 1 km from the village. Here, in order not to frighten the sleeping people in the village, the murderers used only axes, knives and bayonets. And so: Piotr Szewciuk was chopped into three parts, Katarzyna Tomków, the widow and seven children, were stabbed with bayonets, Jan Nowakowski's head was chopped off, and his wife was stabbed with bayonets. The entire Korylczuk family was murdered in a similar way: Prokop, his wife Anastazja, and daughters – Agnieszka, Maria, Stefania and little grandson Krzys. Only Władek Korylczuk survived, and after a short hand–to–hand fight he broke away from the rezunom and alerted the whole village. He escaped only in his underwear, and it was freezing cold outside and the snow was almost waist–deep. Władek ran across the village shouting «Murder, butchers are coming». He stopped in the forester's lodge at the end of the village. It is thanks to him that many people managed to save”.

The killing on village began from Kurylczuk's house. His family was murdered in a terrible way and only he survived. His three‑year‑old son was put on a bayonet and despite the crying and screaming of the child, they laughed and waved the bayonet, shouting that it was a «Polish eagle»…
When we heard a scream, we ran away with one more family to the attic. The neighbors also wanted to hide with us, but there was no room anymore — so they went to Sesiuk's stable. When the Ukrainians found out that there were a lot of people in the stables, they went there and, having cut the door, murdered them, threw in a few bundles of straw covered with gasoline and set it on fire. Only four people survived, they jumped out of the attic, blackened and burnt

His three‑year‑old son was pinned on a bayonet, and despite the child's screaming, the bandits laughed and waved the bayonet and said it was a Polish eagle.

Uncle Janek did not even reach the stables, because he had been murdered earlier, following the example of Jesus' death: he had five wounds inflicted with knives: on his hands, on his legs and on his side.

We went to the burned cowshed, more people followed us to see this terrible cemetery. The body was taken out. The bodies of the wife and s/o Jan Ciurys, wife and two daughters of Piotr Ciurys, Józef Saciuk, mother of Hrycajka with a small child, Agnieszka Pańczyszyn with her daughter, d/o Sowiński, Anna Lewków, wife and two children of Wojtek Dżygała, and my four children and my wife. Some bodies were so burned that their identity was not established.

When I got to Janek Nowakowski's farm „Mojs”, I noticed that he was lying on the road with his wife and two women: the old „Slińczycha” and her daughter Kaśka. Jasko had his head cut off with an ax. I went to Władek Korylczuk's house and saw that his youngest sister Stefania was lying by the house by the window, stabbed with knives. I entered the apartment and noticed pools of blood, Prokop Korylczuk and his wife Jadzia were lying next to each other. They were cut with knives. One of Władek's sisters – Marysia – was lying on the bench. Her stomach was pierced with bayonets. She moaned. In the same apartment, the wounded Józef „Słunka” was lying under the bed. Jadzia Gap, who had 6 stab wounds, was sitting next to the bed. The dead s/o Władek Korylczyk was lying on the other bed, his breast pierced with a knife. Franek „Omelan” was murdered in his apartment. Janek Jędrzejek's house was burnt, and he and his daughter suffocated in the burning building with gas. At the Kwaśnicki family, 6 people suffocated in the granary. Janek Szymków and old Ciuryska were lying in the yard at Jasiek Krąpiec's house.
