My parents bought a farm in the Bereżyce colony. There was a 10 km road to Lubieszów, with Reymontówka on the left and the Bereżyce colony on the right […] In the summer of 1943, news came that in the south of Volhynia, a band of UPA was murdering Poles […] It was a pity for my parents to leave the farm. They were hiding in the forest. They would come to the house to cook something and to let the cows go to the barn. One morning the dogs barked and we ran into the forest. The house was padlocked. We came back in the evening. Padlock broken. What's better from home. Even quilt covers. They also took the horse and the cart. My mother went to her neighbor, who was an Orthodox Pole, to get the matches. She wanted to cook something. And the neighbor says: „Run away because they are looking for you. They are to slaughter all Poles. Janek Andrzejak and his mother caught and killed”. Mama didn't take matches anymore, only she poured grain on the hens in the shed and poured water. And she took the clock to the neighbor. Because it's a souvenir. The parents got married in 1924 and bought a clock to chime out their hours together. My parents are gone, and the clock strikes the hours in my house. After the neighbor's warning, we took some quilts and some clothes and left the farm. For safety, we walked through the woods and through Stochód we reached Zarek's chutory. A Polish farmer welcomed us, he gave us a place in a shed for a night.
