On April 23, probably as part of training, the soldiers of the Officer Cadet School in Przemyśl, while on a patrol in Berendowice, were shot at by Banderites dressed in Soviet uniforms. 30 UPA members were supposed to participate in the action, and 2nd Lt. Marian Grzybowski ?, Cpl. cadet Józef Kukułka, lat. Adam Gaweł (Gonet?), Lat. Edward Pelczar and a Ukrainian carter. The wounded were tied to trees and burned alive. The inhabitants of the villages of Koniusza and Berendowice were accused of the murder. In retaliation, the Polish Army battalion four days after the murder of 2nd Lt. Grzybowski and cadets, there was an action on Berendowice. One Polish Army officer was wounded in the fight and died. Moreover, a dozen or so Banderites were to die. The Ukrainians, fearing greater repressions, blamed the murder on the Red Army deserters.
