Bartkówka

Extract from the protocol of interrogation of Józef Jasiński from Piątkowo on July 14, 1945 by the clerk of the SB‑OUN of the V region in the 'Chłodny Jar' area, Ivan Krywucki 'Arkadija', about the murders of Home Army members from Dylągowa in 4 Ukrainians near Bartkówka:
On 5.7.1945 . together with other people, I traveled by ferry through San near Bartkówka. One farmer said that on February 2, 1945, the stand–up men caught 4 Ukrainian boys near the ferry, returning from work from Germany. The stand–up men took their suitcases. They stripped them naked, shot them and threw the bodies into the water. The Home Army soldiers from Dylągowa, who check the documents of every passing person, are holding a stand by the ferry in Bartkówka”.

In the course of the investigation it was established that Bartkówka was a village inhabited only by Polish families. It was burnt down on the night of October 4–5, 1945. together with the neighboring villages: Dylągowa, Pawłokoma and Sielnica. The command was issued under the so–called retaliatory action Michał G. alias «Konyk», UPA commander in the Przemyśl foothills. On October 4, around 2200, UPA units surrounded the villages selected for destruction. Socie Włodzimierz Sz. alias «Burłak» and Grzegorz J. alias «Lastivka» surrounded Dylągowa and Sielnica. sotnya Michał D. alias «Hromenko», divided into several groups at 2200 on a light signal from the rocket, entered Pavlokoma and Bartkówka. Most of the inhabitants were asleep. The perpetrators, often threatening with weapons, took livestock, personal belongings, money, clothes and household appliances. The following were killed by the attackers' bullets and the fire: Romuald S., Józef S., Stanisław K., Agnieszka R., Teresa S., Krystyna H., Jakub P., Andrzej P. and Katarzyna S. the perpetrators tried to kill Wiktoria K. and other residents. Jan W., a 10‑year‑old boy, was hit in the back by an attacker with a rifle butt. The blow was so strong that it caused damage to the internal organs of the victim and consequently his death. Józef M. was also hit in the head with a rifle butt. Kazimiera K. was hit in the back with a rifle, and the perpetrator took her clothes. Inhabitants escaping from the burning village crossed the San River by ferry or by swimming through. Some of them lost their belongings that had been saved from the fire. After a few hours, the UPA units withdrew from Bartkówka. Residential and farm buildings, livestock, household appliances, grain and animal feed were burnt down. Only a few houses survived from the entire village. When assessing the evidence collected in the course of the proceedings, it was found that the crimes committed by Ukrainian nationalists on the Polish population in Bartkówka do not bear the characteristics of crimes against humanity within the meaning of Art. 3 of the Act on the Institute of National Remembrance. Pursuant to Art. II of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, adopted on December 9, 1948. genocide is any of the acts listed therein (murder, causing serious bodily harm or mental health disorder of members of a group, deliberate creation of living conditions causing total or partial physical destruction, use of measures to prevent births within the group) committed with the intention of destroying entirely or parts of a national, ethnic, racial or religious group. Therefore, it was recognized that the acts committed by Ukrainian nationalists in Bartkówka are common crimes, the punishments of which have now ceased”.
