general info

Uhnów

In the village of Uchnów (Dachnów), poviat Lubaczów, during the UPA raid on the railway station, about 30 soldiers of the Polish Armed Forces died and a dozen were injured. These data are provided by Edward Prus, quoting the „List of criminal acts committed by UPA gangs in the years 1944‑1947”, compiled at the 'C' Department of the Provincial Office of Internal Affairs in Rzeszów. „The gang robbed the weaponry from killed and wounded”.

In the village of Uhnów, poviat Tomaszów Lubelski:
During my visit to my parents in Uhnów on April 18, 1946, the Zastawie railway station in the suburbs of Uhnów was attacked. The attackers ‑ as it was later found out, was the UPA 'Żeleżniak' kuren [battalion] — robbed a group of displaced people and destroyed train depots. This gang, supported by UPA units from the surrounding villages — a total of over 150 people very well armed with automatic and machine weapons — also decided to attack the town, despite the fact that a small garrison of the Polish army (in the strength of more or less company) was stationed there.
In order to get from Zastawie to the center, the attackers had to cross the bridge over the Solokija River. There was a large brick water–motor mill, which served as an effective point of resistance for the defenders. Some of the soldier, militiamen and members of the so–called civil defense made a stand there. The attackers were held back and repelled. On the side of the defenders, a dozen or so juniors also took part — boys aged 16‑18, who willingly performed the tasks of liaison between individual defense posts. I was one of them.
As a result of the attack, more than 30 people were killed (mainly military, but also a few civilians), at least the same number of people were wounded. The attackers managed to set fire to several barns and outbuildings on the edge of town
”.
